The U. S. Government Could Do More to Promote Reasonable Student Loan Repayment Plans

The U. S. government offers income-based and pay-as-you-go repayment plans for student loans; however, only a small number of college graduates sign up for these plans, according to a report by the U. S. Government Accounting Office (GAO). Although approximately 51% of borrowers are eligible, only 13% take advantage of the opportunities for the loan forgiveness, deferral, or lower payments they could receive through these plans.
