The Economy of Transgender Inequality

Personal stories oftentimes resonate more powerfully and poignantly than research papers, news articles, or academic studies. This may be especially true when communicating about identity in re. socio-economic conditions.

Any recent issue of The New York Times contains a series of personal stories from transgender folks, part of an evolving collection, “Transgender Lives: Personal Stories.” These stories illustrate the ways in which economic inequality can result from fear, discrimination, and many other emotions and beliefs — and can also have, at times, lethal consequences and, at others, life disaffirming ones.
